Cider Crate Tasting Notes:

Smell: Light aroma. Dessert apples with a tangy lemon flavour.
Initial Taste: Minimal bite. Quickly tart and lemon forward. Mild gin botanical-like notes.
After Taste: Apple notes make a slight appearance. Blue gummy candy flavour. Flavour sharply finishes. Mild astringency and acidity in the end. Some earthy notes.
On ice: Basically no difference in taste or mouthfeel.

Additional Notes:  Ernest’s Blue Lagoon cider is a very unique creation, both appearance and taste wise. The addition of blue spirulina does indeed make the cider a vivid hazy blue, just like a tropical waterway. The cider is not sweet, but more so leaning towards sour, but far from puckering. With a slightly tart lemon start, it makes way for a blue gummy taste in the finish.

Ontario apples, ginger, lemon balm, hops

Flavour:
Mojito
Colour:
Cannery yellow, translucent
Carbonation:
Small, Infrequently streaming bubbles

Cider Crate Tasting Notes:

Smell: Medium aroma. Lemon and ginger (that is similar to lime combined), with some clean, crisp apples.
Initial Taste: Light bite. An even blend of apple, lemon and some ginger to start that isn’t overly aggressive. Slight earthy notes.
After Taste:  Becomes more full-bodied as time goes on. First lemon, then ginger takes over as the final predominant flavour. Smooth and sweet, earthy ginger remains on the pallet a long time (and builds as you drink the bottle). Mild hops also noticeable at the finish.
On ice: smoother (Reduced carbonation) and lemon.

Additional Notes: Using a blend of ingredients, Kings Mill’s Ontario Mule does a fantastic job of mimicking the flavours of a traditional Moscow Mule recipe, but in cider form.  You would be understandably mistaken if you thought it had lime as a key ingredient, but the blend of lemon balm citrus elements with a smooth ginger (along with some heritage apples) could fool you.  It’s easy to drink, not too sweet or sour and balanced very well overall.  Throw in a small lime if you feel like it and be mindful of the 9% alcohol. Hops flavour is mild but we believe it helps to enhance the other flavours.

Brickworks Lemonade Cider Radler

Cider Profile:

Name:   Brickworks Lemonade Cider Radler
Sampled June 2019

Brand: Brickworks Ciderhouse
Type:
Apple – Radler
Location of Brewing:  Toronto, ON
ABV:
3.3%
Website Link:
theciderhouse.ca
Ingredients:
Cider, carbonated water, lemon juice, cane sugar
Gluten Free:
Yes
Sugar Content: 52g/l

Size(s) available: 473mL (cans)
Availability:
LCBO and Brickworks Ciderhouse
Flavour:
Lemon and Apples
Colour:
Hazy lemonade yellow
Carbonation:
Medium infrequently streaming bubbles

Cider Crate Tasting Notes:

Smell: Semi-strong aroma. Crisp lemon dominates. Mild sweet apple undertones.
Initial Taste: Mild bite from carbonation and acidity. Quick lemonade flavour. Batch 1904 Cider easily detectable.
After Taste: Lemon continues and lingers. Sweet, semi-sugary. Mild musty base. Ends crisp and sweet.
On ice: Reduces carbonation. A bit thinner in body and taste. More watery.

Additional Notes: A very straightforward offering, the Brickworks Radler is indeed some parts lemonade and some parts their original Batch 1904 Cider; however, it does lean more on the lemonade side. Crisp and sweet, it refreshes and is perfect for summer. One of the first cider radlers we’ve seen to be offered commercially – and admittedly more balanced than our home attempts at a cider radler.

Flavoured – Lemon
Location of Brewing:
Picton, ON
ABV:
9%

Fermented apple juice, fermented grape juice, dried grapefruit peel, dried lemon peel, dried orange peel, sugar, potassium sorbate, sulphites
Gluten Free:

Sugar Content: N/A

Size(s) available: 473mL (cans)
Availability:
Clafeld retail store and online
Flavour:
Lemon
Colour:
Bright yellow
Carbonation:
Small semi-streaming bubbles with large still bubbles

Cider Crate Tasting Notes:

Smell: Strong aroma – dry, musty apple with a lot of fermentation-process notes
Initial Taste: Medium bite from carbonation. Slight acidity and quick musty flavours. Some bitter and sour flavours from the apples.
After Taste: Sweet lemon flavour comes through and largely overtakes apple flavours. Malty with some acidity. Semi-dry finish.
On ice: Cuts out carbonation sensation. Increases lemon/lemonade flavour and is sweeter overall, with less must.

Additional Notes: Clafeld’s Disco Lemonade cider is a unique cider, delivering on a sweet – not puckering – lemon flavour on the palate. If you want an aged, mature, more-wine like experience drink it without ice. If you want a sweeter experience that really highlights the sweet lemonade aspects, throw some ice in it.
